A brief google search hasn't given me any information on why 'perfectly good' martial arts in the WMA community are falling into disuse, care to enlighten me?

If it's in the Olympics, can it really be said to have fallen into disuse? Or is modern fencing different from classical fencing?

BJJ might make you a better ground fighter, but Judo will make you a better dancer.

German longsword, as an example, there are others.

A perfectly good, effective art that fell into disuse, and which the WMA community is attempting to recreate.

Your google fu kinda fucking sucks bud.

Interesting it certainly is effective but since we no longer carry long swords I can see why it has fallen out as Codo pointed out. I would imagine several of the cane styles are also run along these lines

Olympic fencing is different from classical fencing. In Olympic fencing, there is an electronic scoring system, but obviously that wasn’t possible in the classical era, so when an opponent’s attack landed on you, you were obliged to say “touché”, meaning “I’ve been touched”. In modern fencing, the mechanism acknowledges points, not you, and that’s something some of the old school people didn’t like. The old system was thought by some fencers as more gentlemanly.

Classical fencing also emphasizes the classical use for fencing, ie self defense and dueling, so rather than using Olympic fencing swords, which don’t really resemble a weapon, they use swords that mimic historic swords of the time.

The definition I was using of effective is evidently different to yours. I don't see much point to a longsword art in an era when we don't carry longswords any more.

One could argue that something like the long sword is no longer effective for self defense since we no longer carry them.
