After reading this, I wasn't sure if maybe this black belt was a "gift" from the instructor.
Its good to read people's actual experiences and hear this is completely deserved.
Congrats to her.

I've met and rolled with her. Matt never just hands out black belts. She's an incredibly nice person and talented athlete.

Congrats to Lily who I consider to be a friend, mentor, and inspiration. I can only hope I'm kicking as much ass in 25 years.

I first rolled with Lilly a few years ago, at the Portland SBG, when I was still a white belt. She's tiny, very technical & so nice that she refrained from constantly submitting me so that I could try to work on my guard passes.
She's awesome & the black belt is well deserved. As for the gi, I think she dyed it herself. I believe she owns her own Jiu-jitsu clothing company (dogfight/catfight gear).

Strange, this article she says she got it at 60? Hmmm
Last year, at age 60, I was awarded my black belt in BJJ by SBGi president Matt Thornton. To earn a black belt, one must be evaluated as a coach and exhibit a full understanding of the concept of BJJ and the SBGi training/teaching method. And on top of that, as a SBGi tradition at belt testing, one has to endure what is called the “Ironman”, in which the tested has to go against everyone in the room with a higher ranking belt. It was a grueling experience, a little old lady up against 12 big, burly, young men, but I survived and can be proud of my accomplishment. I may very well be the oldest female BJJ black belt.
Either way still very notable achievement.

First we see the 9 year old girl who can squat 2x her body weight. Now we have the 61 year old who could arm bar me three ways from Sunday.
I *really, really* need to HTFU.
In all seriousness, a BJJ black belt and a Judo BB. She's obviously one hell of a martial artist.
