During judo instruction in the Kyokushin dojo I am in, the instructor sometimes has everyone get on their knees with a partner. You lock up in the ref position (right hand on opponents gi, left hand holding opponent's gi at right elbow). Then, while moving on your knees, you try to make your opponent fall over onto their back without letting go of their gi. The only way to win is to quickly relax and let your opponent muscle himself off balance in an attempt to push you over, and then accelerate his own motion throwing him over.

I hope that explanation isn't too confusing, but until I tried the drill a few times, I couldn't understand how to loosen up. It might help you get the feeling because it is very similar to standing up and throwing people.

Has anyone else seen this drill? I'd like to know what it is called.

you ninja fags just got owned in a bad way. this thread should go to the classics and mega thread forum due to the sheer size of taebo_master and gajusceaser's penis. (with which they just smacked across these ninja's faces)

The key to relaxing in all athletic endeavors is relaxing your jaw(don't clinch your teeth) and breathing deeply/slowly from the stomach. Both of these things automatically relax you. Try and remember them during Randori and you will notice yourself relaxing and having more energy.

    Six months now.

WhiteShark, if I don't clench my teeth and I'm in a striking situation, doesn't that make my jaw too loose and unprotected from slamming into the TMJ socket? I can't wear a mouthguard all the time.

    Q. Why don't you have a mouthguard?

    A1. You're stupid.
    A2. You're in t3h str33tz.

As to the first answer I can't help you. But If you meant A2 what does it matter if your TMJ is vulnerable when you are lying on the ground because you are too stiff to move quickly ?

Besides I thought it went without saying that you should close your mouth if you are going to get hit in the jaw.

I don't wear one for Judo practice, but you're right; that's a useless question since there is no striking involved. I just thought it would lead to bad habits.

Nope it will lead to good habits like realaxing and staying loose ;) Also, a well fitted mouthguard should stay in without "clinching" your teeth light pressure is all you should need until a strike actually lands.
