That would make for a pretty awful grappling hook. You'd be putting a whole lot of stress across a plane that's not designed to be stressed in that way.

It would depend on the material of the weapon. If we're talking the Qing-era versions they'd be forged iron or steel...not sure the stress would matter if we're talking a load of one person.

Do you want to write it into Mythbusters or should I? I'd love to see them test this theory out...regardless of outcome.

A load of one person is still a pretty good amount (granted, it's less for a Chinese guy who lived a few hundred years ago). Truth be told: I had a grappling hook in my ninjaish teenage years (never got it back from a guy I loaned it out to escape from highschool one day). It was a sketchy thing to operate, even with a teenager's weight on it (I was 150-160lbs at the time). Aside from the issues of warping the blade, I'd be pretty sceptical about a grappling hook capable of severing the rope attached to it.

Do you want to write it into Mythbusters or should I? I'd love to see them test this theory out...regardless of outcome.

Is it an actual myth, or something you thought of yourself? I'll bet they try to avoid self-made myths, because it would open the floodgates and they could spend a decade testing Happeh's theories.

That would be something.

I could have sworn I saw the shuang gou used in at least one movie for climbing/scaling something...Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon? I haven't watched that in years.
