    Hell yeah! Hell no!

Quick intro and question v. Does your rank carry over to other schools?

Bit of a boring intro first since this is my first post. I have never once looked in newbie town and don't really for-see that happening anytime soon :)

I have been a pretty avid lurker on these forums for quite some time (both as a registered user and unregistered) and finally have a question I want to ask (read: haven't searched for)

    Background:
    5 Years TKD/TSD
Active wrestler since 1997 (did intramurals in college)..assistant coach for a while
2 years boxing (kind of rusty though)
2 Weeks BJJ and loved it

I am in the Army and move from place to place quite often. In the past I was moving every 12-18 months and have stabilized to a 3 year cycle with a 1 year deployment

Boxing and Wrestling dont have a belt system obviously and becoming a qualified coach is pretty easy when you have a willing and patient mentor/senior instructor who knows your skill level

I recently got into BJJ and since I am primarily a grappler I fell in love instantly. BJJ SEEMS to be ruled by the belt system, lineage, and tournament results for legitimacy. Since I move quite often, would my rank typically follow?

    Cliff notes:
    1. Hello everyone
    2. Does BJJ rank typically carry over from school to school
    3. Thank you

    PS
I probably mis-represented/typed something but my wife made dinner and its time to eat

If the school competes regularly, then the belt will typically "transfer."

Of course there are varying expectations for certain belt levels between associations and schools, but competition will help keep the schools 'honest' in their promotions: early promotions lead to their competitors getting stomped, while late promotions bring on criticisms of sand-bagging.

In the end, it is up to the instructor at the new school. I don't remember hearing any stories about people being demoted when transferring. If the standards are higher at the new school. you'll probably just spend extra time at your current belt level.

    I hope dinner was delicious.

I remember reading a post from someone on here who said that when they he to a new BJJ school, he told the head instructor that he held a purple (or whatever it was) belt under <whoever it was> and asked if it was acceptable to wear that belt in his school. The instructor said something along the lines of "show me what you got", rolled with him, then accepted him at his current rank.

Damn, when I first saw the title of this thread, I expected it to be something about a guy wanting to transfer his blackbelt across to a different art (yah, I have a 2nd dan in ATA TKD - can I claim this rank in BJJ when I start?)... :disgust:

BJJ might make you a better ground fighter, but Judo will make you a better dancer.

Haha push ups for you good sir.

    In BJJ rank follows skill.

I wouldn't really sweat having to wear a white belt, it's primarily for holding your jacket together anyway.
