Torn ACL advice needed

I have been doing Taekwondo most of my life, and I am looking to get back into it. I tore my ACL over the summer sparring, and had surgery for it about 3 months ago. I was told I could return to martial arts about 6 months after surgery but i was wondering how long it has taken other people to get back into martial arts. Should I consider taking a different style in the mean time since Taekwondo involves a lot of kicking?
