    Bullshido Newbie
     Style: Judo

    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    I'm officially doing Judo!

I did it! I'm finally a card carrying (it's in the mail) member of a full-contact martial arts club! I just got back from the first meeting of my school's judo club. My 7 year "learning to fight by not fighting" career is now over! Just wanted to celebrate. In that spirit, I'll tell the funny story about what happened during newaza.

First I would like to point out that my partner was very winded at this point so I probably wouldn't have gotten the hold under normal conditions since I can't really do much...

So I had guard and as much a clue as someone with no clue when I saw my partners arm post. I thought "hey maybe kimura time." Then I remembered how judo didn't allow attacks to the shoulder and I was unclear about what the kimura actually did. So right as I got what I thought might be the kimura grip I asked the partner "hey is this legal?" He responded "What are you trying to do?" I somehow knew that it was called a reverse ude garami (I have no idea how I know that). He said it was legal and moved is hand backwards further into the 90 degree position. I was a bit confused since it seemed that he had just given me what I thought was a kimura grip. I heard the bystanders say "he's going for the kimura!" and I though "wow those hours and hours of watching youtube tutorials and browsing bullshido without doing any actual training might have paid off after all. I tightened my grip, moved my hips to the side, and pulled with all my might!

and I pulled... and pulled. and pulled.... and the bystanders started laughing

I pulled harder and harder... and they laughed louder and louder

"He's not letting him get it!"
    "This is hilarious!"

I pulled with every fiber of my being until I could feel my arms cramping... and the bystanders seemed to be laughing so hard it hurt

Finally I wondered what was going on and I looked to see if I had screwed up my "noob watches youtube" style kimura grip. When I saw it, I wanted to bang my head against the ground.

After I had told him the name of the move I was going for, my partner had moved his hand back. I thought he was letting me train the move or something but he, instead, had used the pause in the action to grab onto his gi pants. The whole time I was pulling his hand had been firmly secured to his body never in any danger of "noob watches youtube."

But yeah... hey I'm doing Judo now so I'm happy. The coach even said I can try going to a shiai in a few weeks so he can use my mistakes to make a gameplan for future tournaments. Well I told my story. Now to collapse into a heap and hope I can still move tomorrow.

The mat will be your friend, in the prison sense of the word. As in your arse will be getting hit by it often and you'll sometimes have to kiss it.

EDIT: Omega, I'm confused, isn't this site a Judo nut hugging site?

Do you want a cookie or a medal?

Just kidding, congratulations! Now go practice ukemi until you pass out or vomit, whichever comes second. You'll thank me after you wake up and clean yourself off.
