    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    A black belt has I

So last weekend, I went back to Kalamazoo for a) film shooting for Atrophy, and b) to test for my black belt in Shotokan.
Shotokan was my very first martial art, which I started some seven or eight years ago as a sophomore in high school. I got up to green belt before I started college, and got my brown belt a summer or two after that while spending some time back home and training with my old club.
Spending the last year in Kalamazoo, in addition to Muay Thai, Judo, and cool **** like that, I also periodically dropped in on my old karate club to train and spar with folks. Over the summer, I started talking to my instructor about testing for black belt, and he seemed pretty cool with that, so we scheduled a test for.... right after I moved out of K-zoo. Oh well. Not quite perfect timing.
The test itself was pretty straightforward; demonstrate some kata, demonstrate some strikes on pads/one of those cool dummies from deadliest warrior, fight a marine, break some boards, fight the same marine again, talk about my martial arts philosophy, etc.
The board breaking was probably the most interesting part of it all, simply because that was something I had never done before. I have to say, it's pretty damn fun. I see how people get into competitive breaking.
I'm glad I tested for it, as telling strangers you have a black belt in anything will make them assume your a deadly killing machine 70% of the time, regardless of what it's a black belt in. Sadly, it's not one of the styles cool enough to warrant a custom user tag, but oh well.
I would post photos, but they're all on my instructor's camera. He has yet to upload them onto facebook and I suspect he won't for a while.

Next goal is to start working towards a BJJ purple belt. I plan on doing a lot of competitions in the coming season.

everyone else's Shotokan BB test seems way cooler than mine.. But then again I'm pretty sure my school was complete wank anyway.
