    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    The real Aikido anti-grappling!

I figured that title would get some attention. Here is a video of Koichi Tohei, mixing it up with a judoka.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-0RF...ature=youtu.be

For those unfamiliar with Tohei, he studied judo before becoming a student of Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido. He was the first disciple of Ueshiba to teach Aikido outside of Japan, and was chief instructor at the Hombu dojo before he split from the main organization 1974 to start his own splinter style -- "Ki Aikido." As such Tohei may be held responsible for the "no touch" style of Aikido practiced by such as Jukka Lampila.

Maybe the match is not 100% genuine, but in general I thought this was about the best example I've seen of an Aikidoka resisting a grappler. What do you all think? Does this look at least like a halfway honest effort to take Tohei down? Bear in mind that, as the narrator point out, Tohei did not use any of his more deadly techniques.

I have not opened the link yet. But I bet it's the one I'm thinking of, from decades ago, and in black and white.

That "judoka", if it's the video I'm thinking of, isn't really a judoka. In any case, it's amusing regardless.

yep, that was the same video.

I love how Tohei in the initial exchange gets his grip first. I'm thinking he did Judo before Aikido, but I'd have to fact check that.

    Good for lulz...

I guess there's no such thing as news in the world of Aikido anti-grappling. At least it wasn't done in slow motion, or with obvious cooperation from uke.
What makes you say he wasn't really a judoka?

So that the people that they are not used on can fully appreciate the non-violent spirit of Aikido. After all, a Master like Tohei has the ability to rip someone's ki out through their nose.

I have a vague recollection of finding the originals online some time ago. Maybe the original youtube channel, maybe at aikido journal online. There was back story to the "match", and I think that the guy was a journalist or something? Not saying he didn't do Judo, but he was not by any stretch a well trained or skilled judoka, that much is obvious.

In any case, the whole thing was not a serious match. This isn't in the vein of aikido antigrapple vs judo, "it wasn't really judo it didn't count", just info.

Hermann was not a judoka, Tohei did judo as a teenager, the clip is from 1957 documentary "Rendezvous with Adventure" and this dead horse doesn't deserve more beatings.

You're right. I vow never to post another serious thread on Aikido again unless Seagal gets elected to office.
