What is 8 Step Praying Mantis?

Does anyone have any information on 8 step praying mantis? I met a sifu guy in Alabama who teaches this. I have only heard of 7 star praying mantis before I heard about this. I would ask the sifu himself more and more about it but he seems to be seriously avoiding me at all costs for absolutely no reason given. He just disappeared and won't return communications. And I literally visited his gym as well after he said I could come over and after that he just vanished. All I know is a James Shyun started the style.

Well that is a two part question.

I'm going to laugh at you for not knowing that there are other styles of mantis.
    Think Tai Chi:
    Sun
    Chen
    Wu
    Yang
    Hao

    Mantis:
    7 Star
    8 Step
    Taiji Mantis
    Plum (Mei Hua) Blossom

    Southern:
    Chow gar.

These aren't all, but the main ones that are commonly found.

As to the teacher, hiding is normally a bad sign.

Well I am not a Kung Fu guy so I did not know there are several styles of mantis. I did know at least 7 star was one. Also 8 step from what I understand uses a belt system with colors and also uniforms that change when you get ranks. I thought that was "unique." Also the sifu said there is a special way to hold your fingers to show you are 8 step and not from another mantis style. He said, "they are like gang signs."

Would many Chinese MA guys claim 8 step is a legitimate style or just an offshoot of the main line? Kind of like say ATA Taekwondo is just an offshoot group to the main organizations of TKD.

    Andrew,
I know I'm late to the party, but I train Kung Fu in Tuscaloosa, AL. I'll ask my sifu tonight (if he's present tonight) about this style and see what he has to say. He tries to keep current on all the styles in Tuscaloosa and surrounding areas, so there's a good chance he'll know something.

Yes, whereas seven-star has the index finger extended, eight-steps has the index and middle finger extended. Sounds goofy, perhaps, but there it is.

It's a legitimate style. If I recall correctly, it's the original seven-stars with the addition of a much larger syllabus of throws. James Sun isn't the founder - 3rd or 4th generation, I think.

My guro's very early training was in eight-steps, so I learned some.
