When judo & kendo collide
Oddly this was penalized no more severely than going out of bounds.

So Judo + Kendo = Thunderdome. If Its true about the pre 1950s rules, it must have been a nightmare to ref.Train hard, fight easy.

Yes, pre WW2 sweeps were allowed. Now they are a half-point penalty. This case with a deliberate attempt to injure should have been a DQ.
BTW that clip was from yesterday at the Euro championships. The offending player is Hungarian, I think the other guy is French.

Is it just me, or is that what Aikido is supposed to look like?

JNP - Geken Kendo."To sin by silence when one should protest makes cowards out of men".

Kendo guys are some of the best people at distancing, whether keeping away at the proper distance or merging to the proper distance. Apparently that guy didn't get the memo! However, I would definitely do Kendo if it was more like that. But honestly, it's a lot more difficult to keep away and then try to get closer without getting too close, than it is to just shoot in.

Distance was not the issue. It is SOP to move into or past your opponent after the attack or more properly as part of the attack. His hands were way too high though. If the opponent had just done a standard taiatari (body crash, like a hockey cross-check) he may well have dumped him on his ass the other way and everybody would havd said "well that's just kendo".
