What do you do if someone is insulting your wife/girlfriend?

Two questions:
1.) Which martial art would be best to study in order to protect your girlfriend/wife?

2.) This is probably a dumb question, but what do you do when someone is insluting your gf/wife? Granted, if she is in physical danger, you put yourself in harms way to defend her. But if someone is beligerant or what have you, and is embarrassing and insulting her, what do you do? It's easy to say kick his ass, but many martial arts also teach violence as a last resort. plus, physical altercations can get one arrested, or it could end up with weapons involved. Yet, if you don't beat his ass, your gf is embarrassed, and you look like a puss. How do you handle this and still walk away an alpha male? (Maybe ass kicking is the only answer, I'm surious on your thoughts)

Use your words and don't be a dummy. Laws vary by state, but if you put your hands on someone when they just threw a verbal insult at your girl, you can get in some legal trouble indeed. Fight words with words.

Also, martial arts are inherently violent - violence is the first resort. MA themselves don't "teach" you to use them as a last resort, that is something instructors teach their kids' classes, and something that we inherently know as adult, law-abiding (for the most part) citizens.

The best course of action would probably be to not be in a situation where you/your girl will get insulted. Not sure why you're anticipating such a scenario. Don't act like an asshole (that goes for the both of you) and that should be fine.
