B.C. announces mixed-martial-arts referees must pass new training course

VANCOUVER - British Columbia plans new rules to require anyone who wants to judge a professional mixed-martial-arts fight to get certified, a move the head of the sport in Canada says is good for everyone.

Tom Wright, UFC's director of Canadian operations, says the new rules will help attract more big-money professional fights to the province.

B.C.'s Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development announced Tuesday MMA judges who want to be certified with the soon-to-be-formed Provincial Athletic Commission will have to pass a rigorous training course.

The course is through the California-based Certification of Officials for Mixed Martial Arts National Development program.

The certification is part of a larger regulatory framework the provincial government is developing for professional boxing, kick-boxing, mixed martial arts and other similar sports, which have until recently been regulated by local government bodies.

False. UFC is not a sport. Tom Wright is the UFC's director of Canadian operations but has no governing power over the rest of the sport.

Nothing about "Big" John McCarthy who developed the COMMAND (Certification of Officials for Mixed Martial Arts National Development) referee and judging course.

    Fail research and presentation.

Thank you for communicating your preference. I'm sure most people can differentiate between the article and commentary. I'm open to updated information but the reason of not using quotes was that the board's search engine didn't pick up search terms effectively.

SO bottom line is the rigorous course, The Command certification program, or similar-

Passing a rigorous course is well and good-First step, McCarthy's alleges to be harder to pass, AND States and provinces need to incorporate continuing education NOW and provide it free to the top tier officials and for newbies- those folks need some skin in the game.

Bottom line, I want to see movement towards all referees have to have at least some MMA training, OR get in a gym and document hours of rolling around, getting put in every maneuver possible as unwinding a maneuver post tap out is key to safety as well as recognizing these special moments to stop a fight correctly...for the health of the industry.

I realize I am preaching to the choir, and having had a meal with those northern folks they really want to do it right. So kudos on the intent. Good luck with the results...

This must have just come out of the annual convention...?
