    Boxing Questions

I'm looking to start taking boxing lessons soon. What is the best way to protect my hands and wrists and arms from any injury while taking boxing?

My goal is to use boxing as a basis for real world self defense as described in the book "Championship Streetfighting" by Ned Beaumont.

It is very important that I protect my wrists, hands and arms as I study boxing as they are vital to my career as a full time drummer.

    Thanks for the help!

You'll always be risking your hands. Sorry, bro, but this is combat sports. Just strap 'em and make sure you listen to your coach.

We seriously need a how do handwrap thread.

Otherwise good gloves are also a bonus. I like the Punch armadillos. But that will be more of an Aussie thing.

As for wraps. Get long ones. Pretty much the more wrap you have the more protection you get.

I'f you're just starting out the most important way to protect your hands is to remember technique before power, i.e. when you start hitting bags you don't need to pound away on the fuckers as hard as you can, work on correct technique and building speed before power.

Other than that wrap the hands and ask around for glove recommendations.

Some wacky guy with pink hair did a good instructional vid on hand wrapping here:

Wrapping your hands will also help stop your gloves going rancid from sweat.

If you're really concerned about not damaging your hands, you might reconsider whether you want to concentrate on boxing as a means of self defense.

Use wraps and after training soak you hands in cold water under a tap for a while, this will make blood rush to your forearms/hands and make em recover faster.

I think this works but I don't do boxing but it works for grappling cause of the gripping goodluck :)

Find gloves that protect the thumb, your thumb will bang all the time. Learn from your coach how to wrap good, and don't hit hard at first. When you have some time, do pushups on your fists to strengthen the area.

    What?

Application of cold is a standard practice to reduce swelling, which is the exact opposite of making "blood rush to your forearms/hands."

Soaking them in hot water would do more what you suggest.

    Peace favor your sword,

OK thanks for fixing up my info lklawson.

I thought your body sends blood to heat up your cold hands after you've taken them away from the cold and that acts to increase circulation but anyway...

    Peace

That video thrutch posted comes from an earlier handwrapping thread.
