    Aikido sparring

    • Light, openhanded sparring, but still more contact that I've seen with aikidokas in Youtube. The sparring begins at around 00:30 mark and again around 02:00. As I have never trained aikido I'm not sure if this is common or not, but seems like a step in the right direction.

Looks like a step in the right direction. It looks like they call themselves Full Contact Aikido on their website.

The only thing that bothers me is the uke – tori setup, but it could just be for the video.

Boy the life of an Uke just got harder. The weapon training looks less like a person being attacked witha bottle and more like someone trying to get the last of the codeine from his friend's medicine cabinet. "Quit drinking all the cough syrup and get help, you drunk! OW! MY ARM!"

still compliant as ****. The Uke freezes the moment any sort of grappling is about to happen. **** if you spar with one guy being the Uke, you're doing it wrong -that's not resistance.

This. In judo, they even have a special term for the kind of drilling that involves randori-like movement but no actual contest (Google suggests I'm looking for "yakosuko geiko"). The whole point of randori/sparring in the aliveness context is learning to impose your will on an opponent who isn't merely non-cooperative, but is trying to get you first.

I like the idea of yakosuko geiko -- as a judo beginner it's hard enough throwing someone giving you any kind of resistance without worrying, on every entry, whether you're giving your opponent an opportunity -- but it can only be a stage in the progression toward full randori, because ultimately you need to worry on every entry whether you're giving the opponent an opportunity.

Why do people keep saying this is a step in the right direction? Continuing to train in Aikido is to soldier resolutely forward in the wrong direction.

Because with harder contact they might, just might, realize that what they are doing is not practical. Is that not what we advocate, trying and testing your stuff? Adding sparring (even light and/or with tori – uke setup) is a step in that direction. It's not fair to assume they will instantly jump into the deep end, but work a bit more gradually, let's give them that. And hope aliveness starts to seep into the aikido community.

It's the difference between saying "you suck" and "you suck, but if you do this you might suck less".
