I think any style can win when your opponent goes fetal at first contact.

Just a little background about both fighters:

Francesco "Fang" Maturi is usually listed as a wrestler, but judging from what I've read his background is in professional wrestling rather than freestyle or Greco-Roman. He was supposedly a neighborhood tough guy who was getting some media attention and was slated to compete in an earlier UFC but had to pull out for some reason. He apparently had actual fangs, hence his nickname.

Onassis Parungao studed a Filipino style along with Hung Gar. He had two other MMA fights, both in the 32 man IAFC 1 tournament in Russia. He beat a Taekwondo stylist named Pavel Byshiv but lost Ricardo Morais, a 6'8" BJJ guy who eventually won the tournament. More recently, he was involved with a video series called "Kwoon" alongside Cung Le.

This is one of my favorite UFC fights (exhibition as it was) from the old VHS days.

The slow mo shows good Hung gar technique up close and personal. I love the combinations, claws become backfists and then the followup punches...mmmhmmmm kung fu at its bare knuckled best.

I also like how the size and weight difference doesn't even phase Onassis, who keeps his cool and wins the match via submission due to strikes.

If you watch it again he kicks (connects), claws to the eyes with left hand (and connects), punches with the right (connects), then immediately backfists with the same hand (connects) and follows through with a left jab (connects) right in Fang's face. That's five good strikes in about 2 seconds...Hung ga Five Animal/Five Element fighting style in a nutshell, and that was all she wrote.

Nothing makes me happier than seeing huge muscle men getting smoked by tinier, more skillful fighters in a flash of fists (or triangle choke for that matter).

Also around this time, ninjas stopped attending UFC. They were getting hurt too much.

I would have liked to see Onassis fight some more, but I know some Hung ga folks who know him and they say he mostly focuses on instructing nowadays.

Claw/poke whatever. It was still cheating even by the Vale Tudo ruleset.

What did "Fangs" ever do before or after this as far as fighting goes ?

Sheerdog lists this as his only fight

Eye gouging wasn't legal in UFC7, but that's not what Onassis does in this fight.

Clawing at the face was perfectly legal (and since Fang's back was to the camera you can't really tell if his eyes were even hit). Keep in mind this particular UFC occurred when fishhooking and attacking the groin were also still legal, too.

The number of cringe-inducing injuries in the first 10 UFCs is up there. My favorite is still seeing the savate kick that sent the sumo wrestler's teeth flying.
