How would you prepare for the tough mudder?
It's a 10-12 mile obstacle course over hilly ground. Expected to take several hours to complete even for the best competitors. It looks like it was created so civilians could experience the joy of boot camp without signing their life away.
I would use the Spartan Race's workouts to prepare myself. The real key is getting a solid team together for the event with a few backups. Tough Mudder cannot be completed as an individual. It was originally developed for British Special Forces. Many consider it to be the hardest of the obstacle competitions.
They suggest a workout which I myself use for BJJ comps. It works pretty fucking well actually.
Although not something to brag about, P90X plyometrics would certainly condition you well.
Be stronger than you are fat; ie do pullups, dips, some form of climbing (top roping, stair climbing, etc), push ups, have a good core, work on cardio for bursting speed and hill runs, and be able to jog...more so for time than distance. Distance running is more mental, so make sure you can run over an hour consistently without seeking out a car to jump in front of to make it stop. Also try not to always fun on concrete or asphalt...sometimes the difference in ground affects people differently. And have fun! I'm doing one in April with a group of about 21 people.
I would say, the routine depends on the obstacles.
I keep in my mind to eventually participate in a UK event for TM,
and the truth is, I will eventually adjust my workout to the obstacles.
Rope-climbing, rope-pulling and running during really cold weather might be some of the most basic preparatory exercises.
But apart from that, I for my part really would have to see which exercises they demand.
You can have six-pack abs, and still not be able to climb a wall.
Most obstacles are listed on their website...specific for each event; crawl, climb, jump, balance are the basic efforts necessary to navigate them.

Situps aren't going to prep you for that one!
How to train for this depends, I think, on what your current fitness level is at. If your already a good runner that helps. If not thats where I would start. If the mudder is 10-12 miles than I'd want to be able to run atleast that far. Next I'd identify what obstacles are going to be present. Seems like a lot of the obstacles focus on jumping, crawling and climbing so those are going to be important things to train. A fair amount of cold water conditioning would be advisable to I'd wager.
