Groin guards

Hey All,
I'm pretty much broke and in need of a new groin guard so I don't want to throw money away experimenting with different gear. I grapple and do stand up so I need something that is flexible.

I got a pair of what appear to be lycra cycling shorts with a cup in the front and they were terrible. The cup sits into a pocket on front of your groin but the problem is there is a flat screen of lycra between the cup and your balls. The result is your balls don't actually fit into the cup so you run the risk of being pinched (ouch!). Not sure if these are 'compression shorts' or not or if they were just a cheap knock off on the idea. The best gear I've used to date is the traditional karate style box.

Compression shorts or straight forward box? Any brand recommendations?

Plastic cups tend to crack if hit hard enough, so I recommend a steel or titanium cup inside a traditional supporter, especially since as you've noted, compression shorts don't exactly work for you.

I love my groin guard

It's a police riot guard. It's quite bulky by I use it for all my groin protection needs

It goes all the way up to my navel (with an extra layer of protection for the bladder) and back far enough to give me full gooch protection

I have recieved a number of nut shots with it on and it has never let me down

Got it from ebay, free with the riot armour

Did I say I love my groin guard?

It works well for me in grappling, but if you " 'n stuff" in your style field is a little more strike heavy you might consider the big nappy style foam ones for that.

The OP said he did standup striking, and shins are magnetically attracted to balls.

I personally wear a cup in a jock strap directly on my junk then lycra bike short style stuff over that to keep it in place. My junk NEVER escapes. Though if you get used to this everything else feels like your swinging in the wind.

Whenever I have to fight without my groin guard I feel vulnerable and naked *shudder*

So there's nothing between you and the cup, or does your strap have a pocket? Hygiene wise how easy is the plastic cup to wash?

I have been using the Spider Guard for Judo in a jock with normal trunks over the top, after a while I forget it is there and has worked well so far. I used it for a brief period when doing some striking MA's but never took a nut shot so can not say how suitable it is for that.
