    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    The torch thread.

This is partly because I live in a country that does not let me have guns and knives for self defence but also because I believe that the torch is a vital part of the self defence toolbox.

One of the main tactics I use for self defence in a job that takes me into abandoned buildings that may or may not have somone creeping around inside. Is early detection and reporting. Sounds lame I know but I would prefer to be carefull and have less war stories to tell later if it means I go home in one peice.

For me on the job it is torch and radio. In my personal life it is torch and mobile phone.

And it just seems the Torch plays a 2nd fiddle to all the wild and wonderfull gadgets out there that are marketed for the self defence concerned person.

    So the torch thread.

This is my new toy.(I also have a 4 D maglight handy). the LED Lenser p14. The thing is pretty large for a small torch, aprox 15 cm long, but just pumps out light.
the beam has 2 settings of brightness and a slideable focusing beam that has heaps of range on tight focus and frames a very large circle at wide focus.

Do have a question though. Does anybody know how durable the thing is. I don't want to hit somone with it and then have to buy a new torch.

    Four cell maglite.

You won't break that when you crack someone's skull.

And do you work alone on duty which takes you into vulnerable areas ?

I am doing mostly nightshift patrols which is alone. There is not a great risk that I will get jumped but the risk is there. (A friend of mine did as he was going back to the security office)

The area I work is pretty remote too. We are a fair way out in the country.

I do have the maglight. I bought this one as a back up and for major events.(concerts and stuff). I have had a few issues moving through crowds with a large torch on my belt or in my hand. This one has a covered pouch that will hopefully give me some better retention.

When I use to whole sale surefires(about 10 years ago) I ended up with one of the early 1000(i think) lumen lights the thing was damn effective it was so bright that even with your eyes closed all you could see is red.
I know you can things like this now that are not as ridiculously expensive as that was.

Well...if you can't carry a knife or a gun, how about a stick with nails in it, a hatchet, or a tomahawk? Those would likely suffice if you can't put a sword in your hands.

Back in the day I used to work even security- mostly concerts for washed up 70s and 80s musicians who play at Indian casinos. I used to carry a 2 AA battery maglite with a standard bulb and everything, since I was mostly using it to check IDs and the large maglites and small multiple LED lights are really bright. They piss people off and kill your night vision. A few years later, I got a job as a security guard/patrol driver for medical complexes from 11pm to 7am. For that one, they actually had a large rechargeable maglite you could check out for the shift, and I always did, but I had my small one on my belt in case I didn’t feel like carrying the big one around a well lit patrol area. The big one did give me a greater sense of security, but mostly I just used it to spot wildlife at one complex next to a canyon (saw deer, bullfrogs, owls, crawdads and big crazy bugs that only come out at like 2am). At some point one of the guards mentioned that you can wrap your batteries with electrical tape so they won’t rattle in your maglite and so it can hit harder.

Also I know in NY security guards can be ASP(expandable baton) qualified, and it allows them to carry them while working, maybe Australia has something similar. If so then you have this:
