Taurus PT917c: "Compact" is Subjective

So I picked this up at a gun show last weekend, new in the box. It's basically Taurus' version of a 4" version of the Beretta 92/M9. Came with a 20 round (well, 1 in the hole) magazine and a 15 rounder.

I didn't have anything else handy to prop it up on, so I used a watch.

So far the only thing I don't really like about it is the rear sights, which I'm going to figure out how to replace. They're dovetailed into the frame so I probably need to send it to an armorer. Might do the front too with fiber optic.

The viking helmet is a 'must do' while defending the home along with mighty calls of "ODIN!" ala the 13th Warrior.

All joking aside what issues are you having with the rear sight? (Thinking of getting a .45 in Tarus down the road after I buy the .454 Casull.)

Before I started training with ARMA and learned that a longsword is better than a sledgehammer and a handgun is a LOT better than a longsword, I used to fantasize about how awesome it would be to assault a home invader with a sledgehammer while wearing furry Conan underwear and having the Conan The Barbarian soundtrack playing on the sound system.

Now I know that tactically speaking such an approach would be a horrible thing on many levels.

But you would get massive cool points and your guy club card expiration date would read "indefinite".

Congrats on your new pistol Phrost, hope you get the sights issue worked out to your satisfaction.

So Phrost, have you taken the Taurus to the range yet, or did you start a gun thread without being able to report on the most important thing about the weapon?

I'm curious to know how the thing shoots. I like shooting the M9 okay, and used to have a serious fascination with large, overly heavy handguns, but I'm not sure I'd purchase an M9. Or a copy of one.

From my experience with the M9, it's accurate, has low recoil, and you can brain someone with it if it comes to that, but it has two serious defects:

1.) That first trigger squeeze seems a mile long. After that, it purrs right along, but the first one is a real bear.

2.) It's big, clunky, and heavy as ****.

My first rotation, I kept taking it with me on missions. Typical n00b mistake, I guess, but everyone did it, even folks with quite a few rotations. And then I realized it was just because they were all hoping for a chance at getting a handgun kill. My kit lost a few pounds after that, and it became my chow hall/truck gun.

Last time around, someone decided we were taking Berettas instead of sigs or glocks, so I just locked mine in my weapons case, and only took it out to wipe it down and oil it occasionally.
