I just pray I didn't just screw myself by not screwing over a stranger. I've had some bad experiences lately with jobs that wind up flaking out after I've already accepted and rearrange my schedule for. So I just got back from a job interview at a private school, teaching kids krotty for a summer camp (but also during the regular school year).

The school's director liked my resume and told me she wished she could give me more hours, but they already hired a MT instructor for the other days which she was visibly apprehensive about.

After the interview she asked me in a very concerned tone if I thought MT was too violent for children. All I needed to say was something like, "I don't reallly know...I've never seen little kids do Muay Thai, just those UFC fighters, you know the guys with all the tatoos fighting in those cages."

But I told her, "It doesn't really matter whether it's Karate or Muay Thai, if he's a good teacher he'll teach children differently and make it safe for them."
I never seriously considered backstabbing him, but it still hurt to say it; I really needed those extra hours.

I wonder if the other instructor was in my position if he'd have done the same, or if he'd say something like, "Karate is ineffective, you never see it in real fighting but you see MT all the time". I just wonder! I like to think he would have, but if not:

P.S. IMO, since I refrained from douchebaggery it would be nice if I got rewarded with some cross-training opportunities. I've wanted to take some MT privates to focus on clinchwork for awhile, but can't afford it right now.

Good on you for being a stand-up guy. The MT teacher probably needs the job too. And hey, if you're both hired, maybe you can get that specialty training from him after he hears how you saved his ass.

That's exactly what I'm hoping!

Oh, assuming they don't randomly say, "Sorry, we don't need you afterall" when I show up to work next month (I can't help it, I just don't expect people to keep their word 8/10 times anymore).

P.S. Get this, so far they're actually going to let me do sparring (I did a summer program for the city of NY and they expressly forbid it). I had to talk them into it by promising they'd wear hogus + no face contact.

AND they're so uniformed about martial arts that they don't expect me to do kata or even know what kata is (it's like being so wrong you've gone past wrong and back to right again).

You did the stand-up thing and you can go crazy wondering what the other guy would have done, but it doesn't matter. It only matters what you did at this point.

Let you and your skill and your personality and all the benefits you bring to this program speak for themselves. If the other guy has a strong game, then overall the kids win. If he doesn't, then you already know the program director *likes you* and likely *trusts you* because of your honesty and would likely make the choice giving you the entire program.

Props and I hope you have fun this summer with the kids.

I meant it in the sense I wasn't a douchebag at that particular moment in time.
