    Training for knife defense

    Thought some of you guys might find this interesting. I found this video of Itay Gil (from Protect-USA) doing some defense against knife with and without a gun for backup. It follows the typical KM approach (although this is obviously some kind of bodyguard/security course), show a few techniques then drill them under alive conditions. It's interesting to note how most of the guys defending would have been knifed to death - bit of an eye opener for those who think that training choreographed knife techniques are going to somehow save their asses.

    Interesting, but a flawed drill in several spots.

    1. You TELL THEM to show you their hands, ONCE. If they don't you shoot them. In every drill here when the attacker did not show his hands, a HARD push kick to the pelvic area, or an up kick to the balls would knock him back and then you shoot him.

    2. If the knife is in play, you MUST control the knife arm. You do not go for the gun until the attacker is down. Get two arms on his one and break his base by sweeping or thai kicking his legs. Once he falls down, THEN back up and draw and shoot.

    3. Expect to get cut, do NOT expect to get dead.

    Agreed with Tripp, though corralary to his #3 statement, "Expect to get dead if you train poorly."

    Sorry, I inferred it, I should have stated it clearer...

    100% agree. This is the "go-to" technique I teach as knife defense. At best secure over/under control on the knife arm, throw knees and headbutts as you put as much pressure as possible on the elbow.

    I believe this was the basis on the STAB program as well.

    From a use of force perspective, you can't just shoot somebody if they won't put their hands up. At least in the realm of LEO/bodyguard/or civilian self defense

    its good for your chest but it doesn't protect your liver or neck and probably some other vital areas I'm missing

    The thing I disagreed with, was the fact that each of the defenders were trying to draw there firearm, and then grip it with both hands, while squared up to the target. Why?

    Why not draw the firearm, and shoot one handed? If you do this, you can keep your feet pointed in the direction you want to go, and keep yourself more mobile.

    Of the many so called knife fighting/defense systems out there what ones would those of you in this thread say follow a more realistic understanding of the subject?
