Hmm - total jet-lag induced confusion, I guess. I'd meant to post it in the WMA Forum.

    Moderators - a little help?

Very nice jacket. It would be perfect for grappling seeing as it wouldn't come undone easily!

something I saw in the video was interesting though. at about the 1:00 mark there was a technique I saw in aikido demo. I found a video on youtube that resembles waht I saw.

YouTube- Beginning Aikido Techniques : Katadori-dai Ikkyo Ura Japanese Aikido Techniques

maybe im just seeing things, but they look the same to me.

OK, thanks - now we're in the right forum.

I like Bill's comments about the aesthetics; HEMA training gear that looks "professional" and references history without looking too much like "dressing up as knights".

There are many technical cross-overs between historical European and Japanese (and other) styles.

I think if you need clothes to do Ringen you are sort of missing the point.

I'm not a Ringen expert, but my memory has it that all of the medieval manuals showing wrestling show the participants wearing cloths at the minimum; sometimes armour.

My memory has it that Google images depicting marathons show the participants wearing clothes at the minimum; sometimes water bottles.

I'm no Ringen "expert" either but you should be able to do Ringen equally well against someone in armor, clothes, or none of the above. If you are relying on clothing, unless the plate specifically mentions it, you are not getting the point. If you want to use Western gees for aesthetic reasons that's fine but realize it is purely for prettyness.

    at 2:30:
"certain techniques actually call for you to grasp the opponent's doublet, or to counter against such grabs, and this would destroy most other garments. while it is possible to pantomime these motions without a martial arts jacket, you can't truly appreciate the martial art in its proper context without wearing something to approximate the clothing worn during the time when these arts were used, and this jacket works perfectly for that."
