    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    Is Hapkido effective?

I was looking around for info about Hapkido, diddnt find much....but I was wondering, is it effective? I have 3 choices between grappling and thats
Brazillian jiu-jitsu, Judo, and Hapkido (my school offers wrestling wich I havent done yet, its free though, But wrestling is about an hour and I want another class to do after school like the ones listed above)
I was wondering if Hapkido was another larper art like most Aikido Mcdojos
or is it worth looking in to?

First there's a buttload of hapkido threads here that have a lot of the info your looking for. Like this one http://www.bullshido.net/forums/show...hlight=hapkido

If you're looking for grappling HKD probably won't have enough of what you want. I don't think i've ever even seen any HKD grappling even though a lot of HKD places claim to include it.

Is HKD effective? That seems to be a matter of opinion for most. For self defense I think it has merit. It can be a little over wirstlockey though. A lot of people associate HKD with fancy kicking arts like TKD. One place I've vistied was all about fancy kicks (an obvious MCdodjo) this another more tradiitional place I visited that also taught TKD didn't kick above the waist at all except for a few select kicks. The HKD i've seen has a lot of judo style throws with a lot of other RBSD type stuff mixed in.

Research and actually visit the judo, BJJ, and HKD schools you are thinking of visiting. Don't let one school suck you in before you visit them all. If you do this it will probably work itself out, and you can go to the least douchey school.

Yeah, I haven't heard of many HKD comps. I think there are some out there that actually invovly fighting. But, I would never go to a HKD school and expect to compete in anything other than crappy weapons comps. and breaking.

The first thread explains exactly what criteria to look for in Hapkido schools.

Watch a class. If they spar with takedowns and submissions that's good Hapkido (rare). If they are standing around doing the "Grab my wrist no not like that", leave.

This is definitely the best description of garden-variety Hapkido I've ever read.
