W. Hock Hochheim

Recently I mentioned Hocks name on another thread and Ronin Pimp tried to place the man in the Elmore society.
I was wondering what others knew of him and whether you had ever recieved training from him along with some of the results?

I have a great respect for the man and what he has done as far as training.
He has been around a very long time and is very highly respected in the Military and LEO communities.

Never seen a video of him, so can't comment. Do you have a link? I tried a quick look through his sites, and the videos are down. Also tried a quick youtube search with no luck.

I wouldn't put a lot of weight into military and LEO's opinions of a system. The military spends very little time doing empty hand training, and many law enforcement agencies hand to hand is very rudimentary and often time just plain bad. (I used to work as a LEO.)

So with that being said, I'll reserve comment until I've seen video.

I have one of his tapes (Scientific Arnis IIRC), which I liked - lotsa good info/drills.

[full disclosure: the following info may now be out of date as my involvement was from a few years ago] I am not so enamoured with his Fighting Congress stuff. He has broken it up into teeny tiny increments much like getting stripes on one's belt, and much for the same purpose - to generate more income. As well, even though he draws extremely heavily on the FMA, he tries to obscure that link as much as possible.

The information is okay, but no great shakes.

Ughhhh... That was pretty bad. Why the hell does the guy dive off of him when he does the non-existent bridge? That is just is not a good technique. He seems like quite the talker, but poorly executes a bad technique in this example.

Hairholds, which were once a staple of LE Defensive Tactics, have pretty much been (or are being) abandoned. This is for the simple reason that they are unreliable due to a variety of factors including the obvious (many people nowadays have short hair or shaved heads). Teaching a hairhold as a defense from being g&p'd while mounted is patently ridiculous.

If that's the kind of stuff he teaches against knives, I don't see why everyone thinks he's so great. I mean, I've seen worse but thats some pretty generic stuff. Also the pump handle arm bar to break the elbow is sketchy at best.
