Training on vacation
So I have plans to visit the United States of Over Yonder, I will probably be driving as far as Old Orchard Beach, but not farther. Of course there's probably nothing there as far as quality training goes, but IIRC Portland, ME is like 30 minutes away.
I haven't taken vacations in a great while, so even though Old Orchard gets cold water and is kinda non-glamarous as far as touristic destinations go, I'm quite happy to go.
So I've been thinking of looking for judo in Portland, packing a gi and see how I stand up to Americans. I'm an upper kyu rank so I won't be there to learn how to ukemi. However, I have a few questions, namely :
a) will Judo-Canada cover my ass if I get injured and pay American hospital fees (probably better asked to them, but if any of you had experience with that...)
and b) will whatever I get out of that be worth the price of admission (mat fee), given that I'll be there maybe a week or so.
I just dunno if it's actually worth it to go and bang, should I stress myself or just relax and enjoy the Maine summer.
Why bother training at all? It's only a week. Enjoy your holiday. Have a drink. Have a swim. Kiss a lobster. Scare a moose.
Vacations are about having fun. If fun for you is getting tossed by Americans then go for it.
Speaking as an American and not a judoka, America will try its best to leave you dying in the street if you get hurt. Even a small scrape on your knee even.
You need to ask Judo Canada about the insurance.

I watched an episode of "Bizarre Food"s that had some pretty cool places to eat in and around Portland. Why not just take a vacation ?
Oddly, vacation for me is often traveling to Canada to get thrown around by Canadians.
I agree that it might be best to simply drop training and enjoy the vacation. However, I don't see anything wrong with push ups, sit ups, and jogging around. No need to sign up for anything or go too far. Depending on where your staying some hotels have gyms that you can use for free. Simple workouts like those will probably be more of a benefit than finding a new place to roll for a week. Definitely be less hassle.
