You have been misinformed, I'm afraid. Most modern Japanese martial ats have at least some philosophy of self improvement. They also all have kata and consider them important. Even Judo has (2 man) kata. Of course, some arts like Judo and Kyokushin also have ass kicking requirements (randori, knockdown) as well which makes them well rounded, wholistic arts. But others, like some Shotokan karate, follow the too deadly to spar with contact philosophy and all the other bullshido we've seen peddled.
Also, we should start an ongoing thread of good MA/Action movies currently on netflix's Watch Instantly menu. For example, I think Flashpoint is on there currently as well as some classic Mifune Samurai stuff.
