Heel. Use it
I've always used the heel and have had no problems/injuries kicking that way.
On the use of the blade of the foot, I would like to quote JKD instructor Makoto Kabayama: "you wouldn't walk that way, why the hell would you want to kick like that?"
Use the heel. If your foot is tight (which it should be if you want your knees to work in 10 years and your kick to hurt), you'll end up hitting with the blade anyway.
For the first number of years I trained on linoleum or cement, and the class wore sneakers. Bigass high tops were the norm then, and although you learned blade day one, everyone including the instructors used heel. If your shoe's sole is chunky, you stand a good chance of turning your ankle over.
After we moved into a nicer setup with mats and such, we went barefoot and most of the people who actually drilled and used sidekick regularly in sparring gravitated back towards the blade. I can only take some educated guesses why; it wasn't really a conscious thing we decided at a meeting.
I still use my heel sometimes in practice (the variety helps keep basics interesting), so I'm not judging the heel version based on a kick that's cockeyed because I'm completely unused to throwing it. I do kick hard for 185, and I can hit the bag hard either way.Quote:

If you are hitting something with it, heel. If you're just being pretty use the blade.

When I did Kenpo years ago I was taught to use the heel only for sidekick.
