Soothsaying: Serra vs GSP
Friend of mine was talking to me today about his predictions for the Serra/GSP fight based on recent events...
UFC 81: 4 beautiful submission victories showing that a solid submission game is still viable in top level MMA, despite the ever evolving fighter understanding the intricacies of such tactics more and more.
Superbowl XLII: NY goes into the Superbowl against overwhelming odds against New England, to the point that all but die-hard NYers counted them out, and saw the game as just a formality to cement the Patriot's place in history. But in the closing minutes, the Giants pulled out all the stops and made the comeback of a lifetime to take the win.
What does this all supposedly mean? Well it means that Serra is going to get a surprise submission victory late in the 5th round over GSP.
Think about it....
• Where are the fighters from? Matt is from NY and GSP is from Quebec Canada. That's practically New England if they were part of the US.
• The Patriots demolished everyone in their way on their rise to the Superbowl.
GSP demolished everyone in his way on his rise to the title shot.
• The Giants had a trick up their sleeve in the form of not playing to their obvious strengths (Plaxico Burress recieving) because the Pat's were already overcompensating for that, running double cover.
In their last fight Matt had a trick up his sleeve in the form of not playing his obvious strength (Ground submission game) and won with his stand-up
• The Giants won in the final seconds by playing to their strength (Eli's laser guided throw to Burress for the touchdown)
Matt will win in the final seconds by playing to his strength (surprise submission when GSP isn't expecting it).
The writing's on the wall. I love ya Georges but New York's hot right now! You're gonna pound on Matt pretty hard, and it's gonna be hard for me to watch (like this last Superbowl!) but at the end, Matt's gonna have his hand raised. It's fate!
