I went to a job fair today and to my suprise ran into GKR karate (http://www.gkrkarate.com/). A pretty big mcdojo, Im sure some of you are aware. Searched for some posts but nothing extensive. Anyway, they were looking for "staff", the idea being you join them essentially as a sales rep. They give you "fast track" training to instructer status and you spend your time finding them new victims on a commission fee. From what I gathered you could become an instructer and even manager after 2 years training. Non contact. On further conversation apperantly some of there fighters in surrey compete in cage rage!. Must investigate further. He said some advanced students do a "mma" class, that involves no other martial arts. Apperantly they just try counter other styles with a wind, water, fire, earth strategy. Elements representing style, apperantly earth = brawler, wind speed, etc.
The person selling his pitch to me had only been part of them for a few weeks so I managed to weasel quite abit out of him. He even admitted a senior blackbelt getting into an actual fight and getting his ass kicked because he was in the habit of non contact.
Part of there day to day schedule is finding people to sell to, watching a film (he said karate kid to keep morals high!) then doing some training. He couldnt remember the name of the first kata they had just started teaching him (it was pinan nidan).
I was almost tempted but my morals just couldnt steep that low, selling non contact karate as self defense. Especially one that is pretty much a rip off of shotokan anyway.
Annoyingly they are spreading fast because there business strategy is good, just immoral.
During his pitch I tried to explain how if any of there students punched someone they would do more damage to themselves. For some reason I threw in semi schilt as good karate, as I didnt want to put the poor kid down to much. He mentioned "cool wrist locks", I retorted with man loving. Apperantly he had done some judo but it wasnt for him, fair enough.
How can we combat these people..., they are wide open.
