You've never been kicked in the leg by anyone good. If you aren't expecting it you are falling on your ass.
or at the very least, less likely to try and advance
I've never really understood why people don't think leg kicks are an effective self defense in a lot of situations. They steal your opponents movement and balance, no one knows how to block them, and bare shin is extremely effective against unconditioned thigh to the point that it only takes two big kicks to put them down.
Best of all when the police arrive they generally think of leg kicks on the same level as school-yard charlie horses. Sure, if the fight is life threatening, kill the other guy with punches and elbows. If it's like every fight i've been in against untrained drunks... you better use the appropriate level of violence.
Christ I come back to visit four years later and this thread is still alive? Let it die people.
And those wanting to argue, go back and read all 18 pages first. Save your breath, by and large it's been discussed.
Do what you are good at. If you punch kick grapple or run well do that. No real need to over cook these things.
I'm just going to pull mount on a BJJ player so I don't have to worry about him passing my guard and I can out-box him from my back.
EX: You sit on my chest, I start punching you in the face. Who is going to win this fight?
