I think the church wanted the Templars financial resources more than anything else..

Consider the difference between trying to learn Judo or BJJ at home from a book with no coach versus getting qualified instruction on a regular basis.
Right. It was the context of simply learning Eastern religions and esoteric practices that made it easy for the Church to condemn the Templar in the public eye, unfortunate because the Templar clearly valued the cultures and practices they were interacting with (when of course, they weren't killing them).

In the early days of the Catholic Church, scholarship and knowledge outside Church doctrine was a fast way to execution. Only a few hundred years after the last Templar leader was burned at the stake for heresy and refusing to "confess", Galileo and Copernicus who were trying to advance science and physics were still being harassed for the same reasons...they challenged the control structure of "faith" with observational knowledge, reason, and logic.
Anyways, sorry for the Templar derail but it's an interesting topic any time something is so effective and useful that the Church tries to destroy it. Thankfully we live in a more enlightened age...right?
