I have heard that there's a new development in the MMA camps in Japan. There are soon going to be Sumo boxers in the MMA world. This is mostly Inokis work since he needs a new giant to take care of Sapp. I think no one can beat a big Sumo with solid boxing skills not even Titi Ortoz I mean Sumo boxers it'll be totally sweet!
Tooootallyyyyy DUUUUUDE!!! I also hear that the Japanese have been developing a baseball/kendo hybrid! I can't wait!
There was a sumo in early UFC - of was that just a big fat guy :)
He got his ass kicked.
Its one of my favourite fights though. I'd pay to see more sumo's in UFC...
Make friends with them until they beg for mercy.
Sumo vs Sumo? i want to see them try to knock each other out of the ring/octagon
more like THROUGH the octagon!
I attack flurriously!
Let me introduce you to my friends: Hand, Elbow and Knee.
Out of all martial arts, I would NEVER want to piss off a sumo wrestler!I have alot of respect for them, also I have saw few of their match on ESPN. I am also keeping my eyes open for any information on sumo wrestling in Las Vegas. Also some of their throws or trip are very useful even if you aren't that huge.
Just throw rock at it and it will go away.
"I would rather admit I am a lousy student than say I am the best, because once you think you are the best, there is no reason to continue learning."
Seriously. A lot of the sumo stuff I've seen resemble Jiudo. One of the more common throws is basically a uschimata. **** it, I'd love to see some Sumotori training at Chuteboxe!
Of course Sumo resembles Judo! Sumo predates Judo and its Jujutsu forebears. Many techniques of Judo and Jujutsu are derivatives of Sumo techniques or stem from the same folk wrestling root. This doesn't mean that Sumo is going to cross over, except possibly with individuals using aspects of Sumo in MMA competitions or Sumo fighters competing in MMA. Sumo itself is far to popular as a TRADITION to mutate into an XFL version of itself.
Fighty McGee is correct.
"You kicked me in the HEAD! You NEVER throw kicks! How'd you do that? Wires?!" - Sempai Phil (my last sparring partner)
seems to me like sumo and boxing have completely different strategies, boxing is a distance game. How could you combine them? I don't imagine many punches will land.
Out of 5 MMA fights featuring Sumo wrestlers, all 5 well beaten BADLY.
UFC 3: Emmanuel Yarborough was beaten with repeated (32) strikes to the head and submitted by Keith Hackney.
Pride 3: Yarborough again fought and tapped from 10 strikes to the head by Daijiro Matsui.
UFC 9: Koji Kitao was defeated in less than 30 seconds by Mark Hall. Ref stoppage. Broken nose.
UFC 1: Gerard Gordeau defeated Telia Tuli in the first UFC fight ever by a kick to the head and a punch resulting in a ref stoppage. It was nasty.
UFC 33(?): Bobby Hoffman KOs Mark David Robinson with elbows to the head.
Sumo are big guys, but can't fight for **** against someone with skill.
