HEALTH - "Sugar is the most dangerous drug of the times"
When the head of health for the city of Amsterdam - a city where marijuana is legal - speaks on the subject of drugs, it's probably a good idea to listen.
Paul van der Velpen, Managing Director GGD Amsterdam, is calling for sugar to be regulated in the exact same manner as other harmful substances, in an effort to combat the growing worldwide obesity problem.
Just like alcohol and tobacco, sugar is actually a drug. There is an important role for government. The use of sugar should be discouraged. And users should be made aware of the dangers. I see, for me that just as with smoking labels on soft drinks and sweet products come with the warning that sugar is addictive and bad for the health. The government would not fat tax but must enter. A sugar tax And like salt regulations should be drawn regarding the amount of sugar that can be processed. In a product Health insurers would have to finance their addiction therapy obese clients. In schools should not be. No more candy and soft drinks offered Manufacturers of sports drinks that burst of sugar should be sued for false advertising and so on.
