Jujitsu vs. Sumo
If anyone in the NYC/NJ area is interested in trying something new and getting a great workout, I'm getting a sumo group together. You don't have to be big and fat to try it. In fact, there are weight classes in amateur sumo. If you're interested, reply here or message me, and I'll send you more information.
(The title, by the way, was a joke.)
Good luck with your endeavour.
I just recently interviewed the head of the Slovak sumo organization (but just in the role of a huge person in a report about overweight people and summer heat :) ). He said right now they are not even training, there arenīt enough people to make regular classes for...
Hopefully you guys will have better luck. Keep us informed.
If the sumo workout you're doing even remotely resembles the Sumo-Kyokai regimen (as opposed to the one used by those who "represented Sumo" in early UFC bouts), then you'll have to find really, really dedicated candidates. North America is short on individuals who could survive such a routine. If you do find some, you're good to go.
I tried Sumo with some visitors who were doing a clinic at my SAMBO club. It was super fun.
If you're interested in putting together a competitive club, I'd recommend recruiting some ex-football players. Linemen specifically. Having done grappling as well as having played some ball, I'd say that Sumo has more in common with blocking in football than it does with Judo or wrestling.
What Ryno said.
(Ryno, I meant to give you a thumbs up. Sorry, man)
