"Con job" being slang for "confidence scam".
A con man must appear to be sincere to gain your trust. The better they are at acting, the more people they can scam. The deeper into it you get, the more invested you are in the con. Cult martial arts are more about pyramid schemes than they are about fighting.
It doesn't matter there's no difference between a guy playing ninja and being a fifth dan and a guy faking playing ninja and pretending to be a fifth Dan

It would make sense though to dose potential victims so as to disorient and confuse them. This is an old trick and not unique to the Ninja at all....
