Hey there guys!
I've only recently started training Muay Thai and I love it!
However I've found a major problem for me is that when I get hit, I freeze up and struggle to quickly respond. I was just wondering if anyone else experiences this and how I should overcome it?
I believe that all that's happening is your body choosing freeze over fight or flight, But I'm not a doctor. If I were you I would just spar and spar and spar until my body started opting for the fight option.
When I used to do Judo, when I was a child, I had no hesitation with this. Grappling and tying each other up in knots was awesome.
When I started to spar in Karate I was full of bravado until I got punched very hard then I remember my mind telling to 'Get out of there' and like you I just froze..
I agree with jetex88, just keep on sparring. A little tip I picked up was to keep smiling.
Smiling is said to release happy hormones and sometimes it can confuse the crap out of your opponent.
Laughter is the best medicine.
get hit more...you'll eventually get used to it.
Muay Thai Training Tips
Some of the Muay Thai Training Tips are:
* Never take your eyes off your opponent
* Never drop your guard whenever you are attacking
* Develop a system of pattern recognition
* Never turn your face away whenever you are attacking
* Do not become tense right before you strike
Thanks and Regards,
To the OP, just like everyone has stated, just keep plugging away at it and you will notice you will freeze much less. Getting punched and kicked takes some getting used to, but once you have, you should be good to go.

Work hard, be good to your mother.
Also try and focus on breathing when you know you're going to get hit instead of tensing up. Takes a lot of practice but eventually helps it hurt less.
