The only reason I see people lift a big toe whilst curling the little toes under is in preparation for a yoko-geri- a side kick. It helps you turn your foot a bit more so you strike with the blade of the foot. What he's doing there though, I don't know how the hell he is even doing that or why.
What's up with all these colorful Gi's? Is this an western custom to wear a red Gi with high possibility of breaking at the seems when thrown? If anyone in Japan wore this, it would only be a satirical comedy on TV and never in a Dojo.
I don't know, I think that's some sorta TKD dress uniform or something anyway. I just... I have never seen that. I've seen a Judo guy in a robin's egg blue Gi, but other than that all I see is white cotton or cotton/poly, and occasionally black.
It's like feathers a a peacock or something. Nice colourful uniform to attract attention, people might think he's got the ultimate MA because he dresses differently. Just a thought.
Ah yes, peacocks- beautiful plumage, little tiny head! Or perhaps I should say, all show, no substance.
But perhaps a tasty snack...
