Fanchento Kung Fu (2.5 yrs):

Probably not so much as a style as a framework with which to work in. As one of its primary tenents is evolution, you would be hard pressed to find two Fanchento schools that are taught the same.

Originally Cobra Kung-Fu and later renamed Fan Zee Dao Kung Fu...and later mispelt and mispronounced as Fanchento, it was founded by one of Bruce Lee's students (forgotten which). Over the last few decades it has incorporated various degrees of Brazilian Ju-Jitsu, Mauy Thai, western boxing, piper knife fighting and intonga (African) stick fighting.

The Grahamstown club trained for 2 hour sessions, dedicating at least half an hour of each session to contact sparring or submission grappling. Focus was on simplicity and practical application - although sometimes for shits and giggles we do some outlandish stuff: bokken strikes while blindfolded on a balance beam comes to mind. Classes have a high focus on sparring and 'alive' training mixed with theory and techniques brought in by all members, with occasional highly ranked guest instructors of different arts invited to host seminars at our dojo - a very informal & highly enjoyable arrangement.
