Some people believe the Chinese invented the Martial Arts. It's more likely that they were spread to Asia by Alexander the Great when he stuck phalanges all up in the continent's wet parts.
Either way, only idiots would ignore the massive contribution the west has made to the science of hurting people.

Boxing, Bartitsu, Fencing, Pankration, Wrestling, and more.

So. . . I recently watched the Agilitas.tv 'Sword & Shield' DVD, which draws almost exclusively on MS I.33 as a historical source (the sword and buckler of Hans Talhoffer, Paulus Kal, and Andres Lignitzer are briefly mentioned, but more for the sake of comparing technical differences due to changes in sword type than actually delving into their instruction.)

They spent some time discussing their interpretation of the Priest's stance in I.33, and what they've come up with strongly resembles the sort of stance taken by a modern collegiate wrestler (rear heel up, heavy bend in the knees, leaning forward at the waist. . .); this is explained as a way to supplement the limited reach of the weapons used at the time (apparently averaging 33" blade length) and to mitigate the effects of uberlaufen. They said that, apparently, as swords became longer with narrower blades the stances swashbucklers took became more erect, because their reach was better.

Now, to get to the point of this post, I wanted to ask if anyone else here thinks it would be reasonable to presume a similar "wrestler's" stance would have been used by people when wielding messers for reasons similar to those stated above? They are also single-handed weapons with blades comparable in length to the ones used in I.33, and seem to result in greater emphasis on binding and grappling from a bind than does the sword-and-buckler (I presume the lower, more forward stance should have provided some of the same advantages to the fencers in a bind/clinch that it does to modern wrestlers. . .)

The illustrations I've been able to find have been inconsistant with how erect the stances are in messerfetchen, but I'm starting to get the impression that the fighters are more upright in the later manuals than they were in the earlier. This could just be a case of me finding what I'm looking for, though.

I've heard a lot on Minoian Boxing but what's it really called besides Minoian boxing. Does it have a name because I'm not so keen on Greece's martial history. Anyway I'm trying my best finding a good Greek martial arts school (Pangration, Minoian boxing, Macedonian folk wrestling & ancient weapons) but sadly those schools are hidden and difficult to find. I'm also interested in the weapons of Ancient Greece like the Kopis, the Javelin, and Spear and Shield.

In just a few days I will be heading off the France with the second American team ever to compete in the Battle of the Nations, held this year in Aigues-Mortes, France.

We are very proud of our team this year. Our veterans have worked very, very hard at losing weight and gaining muscle and endurance, and out team leadership has worked hard at coming up with new strategies and tactics. We have a full compliment of 50fithers this year, so most of us will only have to fight in one or two categories (singles combats, 5-on-5, 21-on-21, and 50-on-50.

Though most of our team, again, is made up of SCA folks (a great percentage of whom are knights, dukes, etc) among our team are also a former NFL football player and an international jouster.

We are looking forward to representing our country once again, proving our mettle against the best in the world. 22 nations, including Japan, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, Quebec, and a whole bunch of European countries will be taking part, almost double what was there last year. The match ups for the opening rounds have been decided and last minute arrangements are being made all around the world.

There will be a live streaming broadcast again this year. I will post the link as soon as I know it.

In the meantime, here is the main website for the event http://battleofthenations.ua/Tea

Team USA's website is http://battleofthenations.ua/

And here is a highlight video from our last national practice/tryouts in Springfield, Il:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3B5-iQ19-uw

BTW, yest, Team USA is always looking for new members for next year, and the regional groups of the parent organization, the Armored Combat League is holding public events around the country all year long.

Attachment 14757 (http://www.bullshido.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=14757)

---Quote---
The two took their positions with wooden knives and Ohnimus’ knife point began to dance before the reporter’s eyes. A few seconds of this during which Ohnimus constantly shifted his position, then the man who understood knives dashed his hat into his opponent’s face and at the same instant brought his knife against his breast.

“That is an old trick,” he said. ”A man must do it awful quick. His adversary must not see his hand move to his hat. That hand must go even faster than the one that holds the knife.”

“How would you avoid that if someone tried it on you?”

“By jumping sideways, backward or dodging. Fighting with knives is like boxing and everything else. Every attack has its defense, but the quickest and coolest man can, of course, sometimes get in a thrust even if the other man knows how it ought to be stopped – like La Blanche’s swing that knocked Dempsey out. I remember a case. Lightning Jake was about as good a knifeman as I ever saw. He beat numbers of great fighters. Well, one day a young fellow got into a dispute with him, and both drew their knives. Jake had fought so many good men that he was always looking for fancy work and the young fellow poked out like a farmer and got him.

Now I’ll show you how to meet a thrust. Let drive!”
---End Quote---
