Ok boys (and girls) I need a bit of advice on how to handle a situation of the Martial Arts kind. My cousin (in his late 20's) loves the martial arts, particularly the eastern ones. He is a kung fu nut but has been out of practice for quite some time. He studied at an underground place for a few years but it wasent kung fu...he called it a mix of everything but made sure to be clear that it was NOT MMA, but thats not the point. He is always looking for a good kung fu place or just a martial arts place in general but 1 issue always comes up.

He thinks kung fu is simply better then everything else. Its almost like im dealing with a 16 year old sometimes, who has watched to many movies. I honestly dont know what to do. Im still looking for a martial arts place myself and I also want to give kung fu a shot but some of the arguments I hear from him make me wonder.

He FIRMLY believes in chi and all that it can (supposedly) do.

In his mind kung fu is more deadly then anything else, perhaps not harder hitting but just...better.

Most people who bash kung fu know nothing of its power.

He views the fights that you see in movies as being semi realistic and possible to some degree.

He claims the "Animal styles" are some of the deadliest fighting arts period.

He wants to learn Drunkin Fist because apparently its practical.

He wants to also, go to the Shaolin Temple and train with the monks for a few years, he claims he will come back as an amazing fighter

He just recently found a guy who claims he can teach him Wushu that can be applied in real combat and is "what Jackie Chan" knows

There are more but I cant think of anything else specific.

So honestly guys......what do I do? Am I dealing with a delusional man-child who needs to be woken up or is he perhaps on to something?? He TALKS like he knows what he's doing but from everything i've seen....yes SOME kung fu styles can be effective but none of them seem to be the "unbeatable art" he seems to be looking for.

What do I do? What do I say to him?

Learning Combat Taijiquan

Hi everyone,

A few quick points before I begin.

1) This is my first post on Bullshido, and I'm still finding my way around. I apologize in advance if this is the wrong format or location for this question.

2) I'm hoping to avoid debate about whether taijiquan is an effective martial art. I recognize there is some ongoing debate in the community concerning this question, but it is tangential to the intended purpose of this thread.

With no further ado:

I have a little bit of background in taiji basics from a long time ago. I am now intent on returning to it, but this time I want to learn it in a martial context. There seem to be a lot of poor instructors/styles out there, so I'm turning to you guys for help.

My biggest problem is not knowing where to begin. I imagine that I am not alone in this experience, and thus I'm creating this thread both for my personal edification and in hopes that others may find it useful. Here are the specific questions I have:

1) It is commonly touted that all styles of taijiquan can be used effectively in a martial context. Nonetheless, their are some obvious differences in both aesthetics and training.
a) What are the stylistic differences in how the major styles (Yang, Chen, and Wu) fight?
b) Are some styles more immediately transferable to a street fighting context?

2) What does a combat taijiquan curriculum look like? Does it include hand form practice? If so are short or long forms more popular among the martial crowd?

Answers to any/all of the above would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!

Critique my rules

Hello, guys. I read through the entire thread but couldn't watch all the videos yet. I train Taiji (not much of tuishou practice, unfortunately) and started training Shuai Jiao last year, so I hope I can bring something nice to this thread.

In my country's national Wushu/kungfu championships there are already Shai Jiao and fixed-step tuishou matches. Shuai Jiao matches are fine and get better every year. Tuishou, on the other hand has less competitors each year, and the gap between their technical levels only increases. I believe it might have something to do with the rules. Maybe they're not so interesting for taiji practicioners.

Rules are more or less like this: competitors must unbalance the adversary with taiji techniques (peng, lu etc). They can only move the back leg once during the struggle - it's like an ajustment step.. It goes back to the initial position when one of the competitors falls, moves the front leg out of the start position or the back leg twice.

I look forward to your opinion on these rules and if you think they have something with the decreasing popularity of this type of competition.

Looking for some help finding teachers/training partners up in the Bangor, Maine region. Basically I'm looking for any Trad CMA in my area and aside from six old ladies doing tai chi at the Y I'm striking out. I've got 20+ years in Japanese MA and self-defense, but injuries, age and politics have kind of burned me out. I want to keep training, so I'm looking for new opportunities and I've always had an interest in CMA. External, internal, in the gym or in your backyard - give me a shout.

Huang Sian Teh (World Chinese Martial Arts Federation)

If you google Huang Sian Teh, the first site that pops up is a Wikipedia entry. In short: this master started training in Kung Fu at an early age, was active in the Chinese Army (Kuomintang), moved to Taiwan after the communist take-over, worked for the police and taught Kung Fu. Hes also involved in leading eight organizations, including the World Chinese Martial Arts Federation. If you Google said Federation and only 2 schools in the West seem to belong to this organization, while they claim to have 400 schools worldwide.
Now Huang Sian Teh has a mate in the Netherlands whos already had a thread on Bullshido and is a notorious con-man and Bullshido artist, Prince Dschero Khan AKA Gerard Karel Meijers AKA Sifu Tz. The later has made his entry on the internet with an official site.

Dscherokhan.com

Perusing the site I saw that our Prince from the Netherlands is graded by Sian The Huang with a 12th degree Kempo:

dscherokhan.com/100-certificaat-12e-dan-12e-degrees

But it gets even better. There are University degrees for the same person in Psychology, Anthropology and Pharmacology:

dscherokhan.com/105-antropologie-pharmacologie-psygologie

And it that wouldnt be enough, there are certificates for Acupuncture, Acupressure, Moxibation, and Healing eductation:

dscherokhan.com/123-taoistische-universiteit-taiwan

All these certificates seem to come from the same person. Mr. Sian Teh Huang from Taiwan. I noticed that the Chinese writing is the same for all certificates in each category. Theres just a stamp specifying what the certificate is for.
So, given a closer look, Master Sian Teh Huang is a bullshido artist pur sang. Does anyone have any experience with his organization, the World Chinese Martial Arts Federation? Anyone ever been to Taiwan and heard of him?

Remember to add www to the links, folks. I am not yet allowed to post url's...
