Thanks for the article, Ben. Kano seemed to think that westerners understood the jujutsu concept, but just didn't know that they did. Maybe we aren't so dumb afterall.

I have not gone back and read the article again, but I think it was the opposite, westerners did not understand the concept of of ju jutsu, as it is rooted in Japanese culture/philosophy. Back then, eastern philosophies and cultures were not well known at all in the west.

There is a lot of good documented info at Judoforum if you search around. There are a few guys there who actually do real research in Japanese martial arts and culture.

You're right. I misunderstood that part.

P.S. Note that Kano mentions E.J. Harrison, author of the book Fighting Spirit of Japan as one of his students.

Cichorei Kano, Hanon, JonZ, NBK, sam, etc. are all people who do real research and are worth reading.
