He uses Japanese pronunciation because the martial art group/peeps he associates with now use mostly Japanese pronunciation. We do have a TKD/krotty bastard "style" where they use both terminology, but as far as my buddy's Jidokwan ranking he just says sandan..Jap pronunciation/, meaning.
My master is a 9th dan from the Jidokwan. It`s a nice piece of history and interesting to know your lineage, but Kukkiwon issues poom/dan ranks...end of story. Anything else is a club dan/kwan dan and means nothing outside your dojang.

I am pretty sure Chung Do Kwan still issues their own dan certificates and they are recognised by the KKW.

Yes, Jidokwan Taekwondo does issue Dan certificates. They operate as a fraternal order within the Kukkiwon, but offer separate certificates. From what I understand, you need to have a strong connection to Jidokwan for them to issue promotions.
My 5th Dan Jidokwan was obtained in Korea at the Jidokwan office.

Kukkiwon (WTF) Poom Dans (Bo Dan) are usually given to children black belts in Korean Tae Kwon Do dojangs. It is a child's black belt until they reach the age of 16. Poom Dans can be awarded up to 4th Poom. Once the student reaches the age of 16 and tests the student will receive a dan certification, but for a child that has reached 4th poom, he or she will have to wait until the age of 25 before testing for 5th Dan.
In the U.S., many Korean & American masters use the poom belt as a probationary black belt for students including adults until they are ready to test for 1st Dan. It all depends on the master and the dojang.

Thanks,

I don't know if this will help anymore, and as this is my first post I probably lack credibility but here goes...
Jidokwan has been absorbed into the kukkiwon and largely resembles the WTF. When the IJF dissolved we had to adopt a new set of forms. All of the belt ranks and certificates I earned through that system are untraceable to me (very humbling). Soon after it was time for me to leave. In the absence of a concrete curriculum my school joined a new organization and adhered to a new brand of mcdojoism.
It may be that there is no way to confirm whether he is in fact a 9th degree black belt. Through the IJF 8 years ago I believe there were approx. 4 10th (they were super old) and MAYBE 10 9th degree blackbelts. IJF requirements stated that it would take something like 25 years AFTER reaching blackbelt to acquire a 9th degree, he would also not be able to surpass his masters rank (duh) AND pass certain tests AT the IJF (in Maryland I think)
While some still practice Jidokwan for sentiment (as my school continued to do for a short period of time) I would strongly advise anyone to be wary of anyone calling themselves Jidokwan unless you WANT to study WTF ATA style tae kwon do.
On another note Robert Olahs claim to that high of rank in that many martial arts is staggering. He appears to be living the lives of several fake MA teachers with blown up resumes o.O

The actual Jidokwan in Korea (yes they still exist) very rarely issue dan ranks unless you have a GM who is JDK AND is very tight with the organization. I have never heard of adults receiving a poom rank. This is a rank given exclusively for children as far as I know. Lastly if, he is Jidokwan, he should have been issued a rank through the KKW. Do you know the name of his school or have a website to the school?
Which Jidokwan Federation issued this rank The World Jidokwan Federationk, American Jidokwan Federation, International Jidokwan Federation....?

...to add, the whole ranking system thing is kind of new in Japanese martial arts. I will related this to TKD/Jidokwan as it is my understanding they were influenced heavily by Tang Soo Do..which is basically Korean for Shotokan Karate (right?). Anyway, Jigoro Kano implemented a ranking system to appease the newer generations who craved some kind of immediate gratification/incentive for their training efforts. I find it is not too uncommon for schools who's style does not traditionally support a belt/dan/kyu system to add that in themselves for similar reasons.
Actually this is incorrect. Jidokwan, originally named Chosun Yumoo Kwan Karate and Yudo school, was formed in 1946 and was developed separately from Tangsoodo. They had both a yudo division and a Karate division (known as Kwon bup-boo). The system was comprised of Shotokan, Shudokan, and Chuan'fa and was one of the top Kwans which developed many champion fighters which includes the GM mentioned earlier, Park, Dong-kwon from N.J.
There had always been a "ranking system" in the martial arts prior to the development of the belt system. The ranking system developed by Prof. Kano, Jigoro was based off the dan system of from the board game Go. Since Professor Kano was an educator, he developed the belt system to help set learning goals for Judo students. It was not used to supply instant gratification to the students. Especially since, in the beginning there were only white belts and black belts.

Damn it! I need to start paying attention to post dates. I thought this thread was fresh and after posting these replies I saw that they were over a year old. Sorry for necro screwing this thing.
As far as Robert A. Olah, I will ask about his rank in Jidokwan though it is highly doubtful he holds this rank.
