JNP I know there are good HSW coaches and programs out there. The one my son is on is good his coaches are good men but the attitude of a HSW coach in general is not very good. Hell I am not that good of a Judo coach either when it comes to certain things but I will not tolerate disrespect towards myself, others and even against themselves. I have seen shitty Judo coaches and clubs with piss poor attitudes also.
My point is that you will find more MA clubs out there that have a more influential training environment when it comes to life skills than you will at a HSW team. Overall my son is a great child but some of the wrestling attitude has rubbed off on him. I am not the only one who noticed either. Tim even commented on him being a little different.
The biggest point I see from reading your posts is that you, as a father, care about how your son conducts himself in relation to others. My wife teaches grade school, and the stories I hear from her about how detached from their children or idiotic the parents can be just chills my blood. If I were in your shoes (I may be someday), I'd make it painfully and explicitly clear to the boy that his attitude needs some serious adjusting, and some humility and respect is in order. If that doesn't work, then he's fair game to everyone, and I wouldn't let him work with anyone he has a chance of beating at all in the gym. Undoubtedly you've already thought of this as well, but if the wrestling environment he's in is a big contributor to the situation, you may consider pulling him out of that if you believe the negatives outweigh the positives. You sound like a good dad.

I went to an all-boys school with no wrestling team, those were some rough years.
Brutal. I am so sorry.
Thanks for remimding me I need to remember that even when we have very little- it might be a lot more than NOTHING.

Straight Judo guys will be weaker at defending doubles & singles but strong in the clinch.
Wrestlers do alot of clinch. but I was surprised how much my Muay Thai and Judo helped me out in that. That Muay Thai clinchin made my neck so used to it I was like (woah) and the Judo got me already familiar with most of the Pummeling e.t.c and rolling.
even let me use my techniques and pressure test against more people!

Maybe a silly question and I am being lazy instead of looking it up, but can you single leg a guy in Judo or is it more Greco Roman with the throwing rules? I understand the main goal is an Ippon so working a guy to the ground via single or double kind of defeats the purpose, but I was just curious if it was also against the rules?
(I figured asking a legit question might turn this into something other than giant circle jerk.)

Up until december 31 you could single or double all you wanted. Now you can't touch a guy's leg as a direct attack. It has to be part of a combo (not the first technique). Your legit question has its own circle jerk all over the internet unfortunately.

I've been seriously considering taking Judo this summer, but overall I don't know all the details of it, so forgive my lack of knowledge on this topic. So even though it's againsts the rules, do they still teach/train single/double leg takedowns?
Also, I gather that Judo is typically taught as a sport, not self-defense, correct? (Not that I'm implying that you can't use it for self-defense; I'm just curious.)

Wow, this kind of makes me re-evaluate whether I would want to get involved in Judo or not. I mean right now the sun, moon, and stars all have to be in perfect alignment for me to remotely think about training again. However, I was recently strongly considering Judo over BJJ just because there are more convenient school options and the cost difference is fairly considerable.
Being a former wrestler though, I typically initiated combo attacks with a single leg and not the other way around.

it'd suck to have to broaden your skill base.

Leg attacks aren't banned they're just restricted to certain circumstances. I dunno how often they're going to be taught now. Even in the past they were kind of looked down on for some reason.
I hear tell that there are dojo that still teach all the banned techniques but my dojo pretty much just teaches for competition. It varies I guess.

More concisely to the point, that rule change probably puts BJJ back on top if I were to train again. I had strongly be considering Judo even though I was mostly interested in ground work, because a) Judo schools are little more prevalent and convenient than BJJ schools in Atlanta and b) BJJ schools (especially Alliance) are really fucking expensive.
Adding a repertoire of better grip fighting and really fun throws to the mix does have some appeal, but I am mostly interested in improving my ground game anyway.

That kid was just all sorts of awesome with some of those throws. I actually saw a guy win state one year using that inside leg trip (sorry no clue what the Japanese name is) to score in sudden death during the finals.

Compression shorts please. Don't most folks wear a cup? I can't imagine commando or even boxers while grappling.
I simply wear boxer briefs at Judo. My balls have been just fine.

Who would win in an erotic submission grappling match between Michael Spinks and John Matua?
Are they covered in warm baby oil? Whatever, Matua doesn't have a chance either way.

Any sort of warm lubricant would do, as long as they're using gallons of it. This could theoretically make the match last for hours like in Turkish oil wrestling, although Matua would probably submit from exhaustion much sooner. He's probably the only plus 400 lbs UFC fighter who wasn't a sumo wrestler.
