I hate this whole 'i'm a chun chun till I die' ****. OK, you have a background in chun, but the whole point of MMA is that you learn moves outside of your style so you can kick ass..
..In fact its only because of this improvement that I will be buying the new ufc game

The guy was a spaz, but to be completely fair I don't think Don Frye or Rickson Gracie would have kicked the pads any better. If the guy is coming from a different tradition, let him do his think. I don't think MMA fighters should be pre screened for MT skills, and I don't think anyone would argue that someone like Mark Schultz should be excluded from competition should be excluded on the basis of his standing striking.
On the other hand, it's their show and they can select anyone they want.

Yeah, but do we actually know they specifically told him to throw a thai round kick instead of "here, let's see you kick these pads"?
And besides, Don Frye and Rickson Gracie don't have to worry about trying out for MMA organizations as unknowns. This joker needed M-1 way more than they needed him. You don't get to dictate terms at a tryout when you're a nobody.
Also, I'd bet anything that this guy will point to this video that WC is just too deadly for the ring, because he got turned down at the tryout. Probably why he favorited it.

well look at it this way. he probably had to punch things first, I don't think the kicking is what failed him
the Don Frye / Rickson Gracie argument doesn't take into account that the sport is very different than it was when those two break in, anyway.

Sure. their show, their rules. I'm just saying the argument that MT (or something similar) is the best prep for MMA striking becomes circular if you have to demonstrate MT (or similar) skills to make the cut.
And besides, Don Frye and Rickson Gracie don't have to worry about trying out for MMA organizations as unknowns.
I just meant to say that if you had two unknowns with the exact same skill sets and attributes as Rickson and Frye, or even vintage Belfort, you might be missing out on some good fights by excluding them for lacking a good Te Tud.

Yes, there are a lot more fighters with servicable MT skills than before, but still...
I love MT, but I hate to see it's central position in MMA striking rest on the presumtion of superiority, when that position was earned in the past.

Maybe it's like X Factor or American Idol, you know. You sing and slip at a try out, you're out. He kick and slip at a try out, he's out.
The guys name is Shawn "Seal the Deal" Obasi. He has been fighting since 2004 and was an up and comer in the NYC fight scene. I found a site that lists his record as 0wins-2losses, but there are many fights on youtube that clearly show him winning. He is an okay fighter based on the youtube vids, and he actually uses wing chun. I would have liked to see him spar as Im sure he wouldn't be an easy fight.

Well ... it's a shame that vid didn't show a lot of his striking as I would honestly like to see how well he holds up in that respect. That wasn't his fault mind you.

haha no sorry rickson, don frye, and rampage can all throw a mid-level kick without falling down thanks for playing though. Rickson in particular can probably actually crawl through a tennis racket circus style, at least he could in the day.
If you can't throw a reasonable round kick to the thigh you haven't been studying martial arts for "lifetimes and lifetimes," even if they aren't part of your primary style.

let's be clear about something:
if your style doesn't have
I repeat, does not have...not "does not emphasize" not "seldom uses" not "treats as an advanced technique" but literally doesn't have a fundamental strike like a round kick in it, it's an incomplete style.
I'm glad a huge guy can make it work on fat cans six inches shorter, that's awesome, but it's still an incomplete style.

I mean he's in reasonable shape and has a history of competition. Making your promoter like you is half the battle.
This is a very good point.
A couple more lower tier fights, some wins and he could go back to M-1 and say "Look, my **** is working." Then they'll recall that he was wailing like a hyena and grovelled on the floor like it was an early trials-episode of "American Idol"

Rampage? Strawman.
Frye? Pic or vid, or it didn't happen.
Rickson? Please... YouTube- Rickson Gracie vs. David Levicki (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHwVQmZVZL4) 1:18 to 2:04 (lol)

An unknown, whiney guy who likes Wing Chun needs to be scrutinized more than an Olympic gold-medalist wrestler.
I don't see what the problem is with asking a fighter to throw a few kicks at a tryout. He's obviously going to be dealing with roundkicks in competition, and if he had displayed an acceptable level of proficiency with them that probably would've been a good indication that he has experience defending them as well.

You're prejudging everything. Schultz does not need to leg check because he's got a different tool kit than the average MMA guy. Who's ta say mr WC guy doesn't have something too? MMA used to be about answering questions. Now it's all about having all the answers.
Not. Very. Interesting.
