Does anyone here have any experience with Camal Judo in West Paterson, NJ? The website is here (http://www.camaljudo.com/). I searched Bullshido but did not find anything on the school. Anything you can tell me would be appreciated.

I'm confused as to why he's wearing a red belt.

It's not a red belt per se, it's a red and black panel belt. Depending on the system, it can be worn as a 5th degree. It precedes the candy cane belt which precedes the red belt.

Most people don't bother with this belt. Further, those still actively competing usually just wear a regular black belt as these are generally just for ceremony

The red & brown (not white) candycane I believe is optional for 4th+ in Judo.

My head instructor wears his (he mainly just coaches now, but jumps in every so often) and gave his old blackbelt to a student when he hit shodan (nice gift imo).

it's a USJA thing for yodan and godan, apparently. only USJA uses this, from what i read. why? i have no clue... can't really think of any good reason to come up with a new belt.....

Is black no longer a good enough symbol of being a Yudansha ?

I just find it all a bit contrived, much like when people start using Soke, Kancho, et al.

The red and white belt USED to be a teaching degree. The levels of black were about mastering YOUR judo; the red and white meant you could teach others how to master THEIR Judo.

Sadly, that is no longer the case. But there is the history, and why I wear mine.

I've heard about him and his students in the tournament circuit and generally in the NY/NJ judo scene. I don't really know specifics but it's all positive stuff.

I believe he also has a program designed for BJJ/MMA/subgrap outreach: a 10-class punch card separate from regular enrollment, so that you can come and cross-train occasionally. Again, I don't have specifics, but that's what I heard. His schedule also has a no-gi judo class; I'd love to know more about that.

As noted on his site, he produces competitors. Serious competitors.

These guys are good. Good coach great program would love to be in that area of the US to get some solid Judo support. Morris, Pedro, Camal and about 50 other excellent Judoka in that area. But they have snow and no crawfish so I would not live there.

I wasn't aware of the legitimate use of those belts within Judo.

let's not confuse the 'red and BLACK' belt with 'red and WHITE' belt.
from what i've been able to look up, 'red and BLACK' only exists within USJA.
i was scratching my head too when i saw the 'red and BLACK' belt picture.

I appreciate the response. I think I will check them out when I move out there.

Thanks for the info; I look forward to checking them out.

If crawfish are same as crayfish then NJ does have them. But we are expecting 5-8 inches of snow tonight so you are better off in LA.

At the West Paterson Dojo, times are split between Judo and Karate. Judo taught by Anthony Camal and Karate by Juan Perez. I train with Juan Perez.

I used to train at Judo (In London) and while I haven't trained with Tony, I can advise that his fighting is good, his technique solid, and his teaching produces solid competitors. He also teaches No-gi and some of the guys there are usefull.

I would recommend traing with Tony if you're in the area. You'll find him honest with no B.S.
