people says that aikido isn't about chi or ki and yet the very name aikido means the way of universal chi or something. And ueshiba threw lunatics around without touching them, as a testament to his mastery of aikido. BUT NO! wait a minute! Aikido has absolutely nothing to do with internal energy at all! :sad3: By the way did you know that kickboxing is in fact wrestling? Don't be confused by the self-explicit name :evil6:

First, uh...no, that is not what Aikido translates as, at least not from anyone I have ever heard it explained by.

Second, Ueshiba had an incredibly long and varied martial arts career and his techniques and beliefs changed quite a bit from beginning to end, so to say that he "threw lunatics around without touching them" is a gross overstatement and incorrect. But hey, don't bother listening to multiple people on this thread (many of whom are far more knowledgeable then I am) who tell you differently, since you obviously have a wealth of first hand experience in the art.

Don't be confused by the self-explicit name :evil6:And you forget that in his younger years Ueshiba was a senior NCO in the Japanese Imperial Army (which pretty much meant he was a hard fucker), also his primary Jujutsu teacher was arguably one of Japan's meanest motherfuckers - Ueshiba earned a menkyo kaiden in Daito ryu, which again means he wasn't the ***** (at the time) you'd like to suggest.

Its fucking moronic 'tards like you who, whilst jumping on the 'lets bash aikido' bandwagon fail to grasp more than what they choose to look at simply to make their retarded, ill informed opinion.

Yes, I actually agree that a lot of Ueshiba's later life ideology and methodology toward budo was quite off the wall, even for the Japanese, that shouldn't entirely negate the fact of his lifetime’s worth of dedication to study. If you think Ueshiba was a loon fine, that's your opinion and I respect that however, you're not selling me or anyone else here anything new that hasn't been said like a trillion times already so, do us all a fucking favour and shut the **** up already. Unless of course you have something worthwhile to say.

...irimi nage can be varied a lot, and you can make a really short version of it which is much more 'realistic'.
That's known as ara waza which means to make a technique "severe".

Aikido technique accounts for uke being able to make ukemi - to receive the application; a common misunderstanding of the word UKEMI is that it means breakfall, that is actually far from correct. The breakfall is the result of uke "receiving" the technique however; the act of receiving the technique is much more than just being able to perform an appropriate fall.

The concept of ara waza is that tori/nage removes the option for ukemi to take place, thus the technique becomes severe.

I have a question for a few of the "real" Aikidoka.

What, exactly, would you drop or change from the current training methodology of "Modern" Aikido to make it a more viable art, aside from more aliveness in training? Main reason I ask, is that growing up watching Steven Seagal movies I thought it was an amazing art. I still think it is a great art, in small doses, and really for the sake of keeping the art alive, would liek to train in it. Now, I have no aspirations of being a great Aikido teacher, since i am pretty much locked in with judo and TKD, but I would like to learn it.

I'm not what you would describe a "real" aikidoka, that's because;

1 I don't study aikido because I have a desire to fight people
2 What I study is traditional/classical methodology and not contemporary S/D orientated

So if your question was partially directed at me, I can't help because the traditional/classical aspects of what I study is what primarily interests me.

Okay that makes sense. Are there any aspects that you would change to make it a viable art?
