any good discussion on Dao Yin and such? I'm still getting a handle on how much depth there is to that sort of material...

Nice cleanup, IIF!

I was going to make one, but the last time I started a physical training for CMA thread it was colonized by wankers. :icon_cry:

i keep trying to get my sifu to come visit your class, but he is really stuck in his sunset area life, and has no car in which to get to oakland.
i mention it only because he has been devoting a lot of time to dao yin lately, so there would be a great opportunity for sharing of knowledge.
It is Fake

Please do. I was searching but, all the good stuff is buried in multiple threads of "IT IS BS."
Thank you.

he prefers "dude". he's not teaching publicly right now but i will put you in touch with him. i'll email you later today.
Never heard of dao yin so I looked it up.

First sentence brings up qi. Are there alternate explanations of what it is that don't rely on magical thinking?

oh no, not again....
qi/chi doesn't have to be dependent on magical thinking. think of qi as breath, and qi gong and breathing and relaxation exercises.
this has been gone over SO many times on this board...
IIF, i'm sorry for the derail, can we move the dao yin stuff to another thread, or do you not think that is needed?

i know i will regret getting into this, but here's an example of non-magic dao yin:
YouTube- Daoyin Qigong Basic reclined Routine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaTwqEw6UVU)
this example is, essentially a core workout, and each position can be held for longer periods to make it tougher.
sort of similar to yoga, or certain exercises for grapplers. in this case it is being offered as a way to promote health by offering a low impact core exercise that is possible for anyone to do (this is not being marketed to martial artists, per se, but there are ways to make this sort of thing more demanding.)
Ok if this is an ab workout (my belly is sore just watching it), what does he mean when he says "focusing in on the lower dan tian"? Is it just a point on the body or something else? I've only ever heard about qi in relation to magical thinking so I'm curious what the non magical explanation is.

Dan Tien = "energy center" within the core of the body, 2 inches or 3 fingerwidths (depending on your source) below the navel, and towards the center of your body.
According to TCM and various Taoist practices, it is one of the 3 energy (qi) cores of the body (not unlike the concept of a chakra.)
Now I need a shower.

the dan tien is a spot approximately 2 inches below the navel, and in TCM (traditional chinese medicine) theory it is the source of qi in the body.
it can be useful in qi gong practice to visualize light traveling through the body, originating in the dan tien (although it is not necessary.) note that i say "visualize" the light moving (not move the light.) this sort of visualization can be useful in the same way as visualizing the way you will fight before you enter the ring, as a mental exercise.
sometimes one will be told to focus on a particular part of the body during an exercise, merely as a way to get you to focus on something.
don't get too hung up on the mystical sounding stuff, qi gong theory came from a time when people didn't have the same sort of scientific tools that we have now. think of it as breath, blood, life energy, whatever.
once you get away from thinking that it's going to do something magical, it just becomes another way of relaxation and energy development.
non-mystical Dao yin. . .
In my style, our chi kung is in our forms.
Our Dao yin exercises pull concepts and
ideas from the forms, expand on them,
and focus your mind & body on a single
aspect much like any drill done over and
over to train a specific technique.
No mysticism there.
We have both static and moving Dao yin.
The static similar to dynamic-tension or
isometrics, the moving exercises develop
understanding & perfect applied technique.
In our case, the Dao yin and the chi kung
are not independent work but, foundational
components of the whole.

No, sorry. . .
as far as I know, there aren't any legitimate practitioners
of my style that are unknown to us, and out of respect
for sifu's wishes, I will not be filming any part of our system.
(Too deadly, y'know - lol!)
However, if you're ever out this way, feel free to drop by.
I would be happy to show you whatever you want to see.
In any case, the specific exercises are not important to
this topic. What is important is that mostly, it is EXERCISE.
Sport-specific exercise that facilitates your intended ma.
No mysticism.
As sifu's sifu says, "If it doesn't help you fight, hat use is it?!"
