The old Okinawan karateka in me wants to know if you have any conjecture regarding the similarities between this and Okinawan sai?

many Hakka and Fukienese styles of Gung-Fu use the sais, and since Okinawan Karate was greatly influenced by Fukienese Gung-Fu, it's pretty easy to see where they inherited the sais from.

Oh, that's what a Chinese ruler is. When I read about it I always just assumed they were talking about one of these:

It's not that far fetched really; Choy Lay Fut apparently has weapons like smoking pipes and benches.
Besides I had a friend in school who had a metal rule and when he used to hit me with it it fucking hurt. Naturally I had to stab in the hand with my pen as a result.
