Hey I'm starting Judo in a few months, what muscles do I need to work out and get strong for judo? Idk if this goes here or on some other section, but I can admit i'm a noob here and I'm a bit intimidated to post it anywhere else but here. Thanks.

Are you moving, and that's why the delay?

For me, judo takes cardio, core strength, grip strength, shoulders and legs. There's a ton of pulling, squatting, and twisting.

I'd say mostly core muscles, then legs, back, shoulders, neck. I'm sure some real expert will be more specific.

If you're a wrestler you should be quite conditioned already.

Sorry, I was unclear. Delay = "starting judo in a few months"

Why not start now?

Squats, rows, pull ups, rope climb, grip strength

No mention of the lower back?

Is the lower back not part of the core?

Is it not worked by squats, rows, and pull ups?

Anything MTripp says plus the core. Not just situps/supermans, but twisting motions as well. Lots of that.

Oh sorry 1point2, I would start now but I have to finish up my time in shotokan karate. I'll be a blackbelt hopefully in october/november. Also I'm still looking around for decent dojos too. Thanks for the info everyone.

Are you going to drop karate or cross train?

Devil's advocate opinion, but why finish the Shotokan BB if you are just going to drop it? I dropped my karate (at nidan level) years ago had have since done other arts. Save the money for the BB test and start judo earlier.

With all due respect to the posters with more judo experience than me, but why does no one ever mention the neck? When I started judo, my legs, back, hands, abs, etc. stopped being sore long before my neck did.

Do you know how to the Olympic lifts? Power cleans and power snatches are never the wrong answer.

I was planning on dropping it. Well I would, but I've been through a few different martial arts and haven't finished one. I don't see anything wrong with it but my dad is disappoint i don't finish anything so I will continue atleast for him.

Hmmm, I was just poking you with a pointy stick just to see if i could hit a nerve, but I got your dad instead. Apologize to the old man for me.

If you view a belt colour or certificate as the end point in your learning, then you might be looking at it the wrong way. IMO, you want to learn what you don't know. If you know strikes, learn throws and grappling. (and visa versa, or course)

Lol. Yeah i know, I mean I know everything for blackbelt, and for the physical aspect the instructors put on it, I've done much much harder in wrestling. But I mean it's only a month or so, so i can do it.
